Quick little status update on this job search/soul search that I have going on.
- I have written 5 article on Textbroker.com. It pays chump change, almost literally but it is good experience, easy and well, it does still pay. At my current pay rate, I think I would have to write about 600 articles on there a month to subsidize my salary. Whoa, come to think of it–that is only about 20 a day. Too bad I don’t think they have 20 a day on there that I could write.
- I have submitted my application to be a substitute teacher AGAIN on the Loudoun county website because I have never heard a single thing back from them. I thought school systems were desperate for subs? With a Master’s degree? And open availability? Guess not….
- Submitted umpteen proposals on Guru.com for freelance articles. Have not heard back on any yet.
- Have sent multiple emails out networking with people. This actually seems like it is going some where and I’m meeting with several different people next week.
- Wrote an article for Technorati.com. Article was accepted into their political OP-eds. Will link once it is published (no pay though.)
- Scoured the pages of Craig’s list and applied to a host of jobs include one as a French translator and another to help teach children about cooking after school (How AWESOME would that be?!@$!)
- Update my resume, biography and got a host of writing samples together that I continue to send out.
- Applied on multiple websites to be a Tutor. This seems like a secret world that I don’t know how to break into.
- Email multiple volunteer agencies in Loudoun county that I would be interested in volunteering some of time to if I could get details back. NOT A SINGLE PLACE HAS EMAIL ME BACK. WHAT?! People aren’t even interested in taking me up on my FREE labor offers!
And there you have it. Slightly discouraging but not really all that far from what I expected. Just going to keep plugging away and know in my heart that it will all work out.
To Smile.

I think that’s what you have to do – just keep working at it and eventually something will break through. It only takes ONE great opportunity for you try a new direction. Good luck as you finish out your job and pursue new opportunities!
I have had friends have similar experiences with volunteering. So strange.
There is something on this page that makes a million new blank pages open up every time I close it!
Sheesh! It sounds like you have been busy. I will keep my fingers crossed that the right opportunity comes your way very soon.
Teaching children how to cook? Yes, please! I can’t help but wonder what the expectations would be for that… ants on a log?
Thank you. I keep thinking the same thing. I am definitely a driven person and a hard worker. Something will work out.
It is SO strange. I am desperately seeking to give away free labor and people aren’t responding! It is SO bizarre. I just think it means the people that work there are so overworked they can’t even respond to inquires. (Or at least that is what I am hoping is happening.)
Missy–how bizarre.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Please do. I am hopeful but I would like things to work out sooner than later.
How fun would that be?! I bet it would include a lot of baking sweets but I was also envisioning pastas or baking bread. Even making homemade chicken noodle soup or chicken fingers would be fun for kids.
Too bad I never heard back from the person!
I’ve made a couple of attempts at volunteering this year, too…to no avail! I ended up having to do many follow-up calls and e-mails, that it was a lot of work. I KNOW volunteering is about work…but shouldn’t they be returning calls/e-mails ASAP?!
Tutoring is so tricky. I found that once I found ONE child to tutor, word spread like wild fire. At one point 2 years ago I was tutoring 5 kids/week! Hopefully once you find one person, word will spread. And I am SHOCKED that the school district hasn’t contacted you about substitute teaching yet?!
At least it isn’t just me!! I am so surprised how hard it is to get someone to call me back. But right now I’m so busy running around with the job search that I’m going to just have to let it be right now.
I went by the school district to sub–apparently they forgot to send me the information for the next steps. They sent it last night. Now I may need a Ph D to figure it out.
